Undress

Discover your deepest self by peeling off your layers.

View Transcript
In this exercise, you're going to undress yourself. Not literally, All your clothes can stay right where they are. But we're going to peel off some layers nonetheless. Let's imagine you're standing in a quiet bedroom, all by yourself. It's comfortable in here. There's a big dresser and a mirror. Now think of the things you own, your money, your phone, your living space, maybe your car. Imagine you're wearing all of them on your body like clothes. Take those things off, fold them up neatly, and tuck them into one of the dresser drawers. Now in the mirror, you see your face, your body, the physical part of you that's visible to the world, that defines you in their eyes and often in yours. Take your physical appearance off, fold it up, and put it in the dresser. Underneath that layer is your to-do list. All your obligations, the things you need to accomplish, the things you can accomplish, the things you think you should accomplish, take them off and put them away. And finally, your reputation, what people think of you, what you hope they think of you, all their expectations and assumptions about you, whether right or wrong, your relative status, how you compare with others. Take it all off and put it in the biggest drawer. You are undressed, without your things, your body, your deeds, and your reputation. What's left? It's you. Your deepest self. Listen to yourself, to your spiritual center, and tell yourself what you hear.
