While You Work: Laundry

Practice spirituality while you do the laundry.

View Transcript
Hi, I'm Teri. I'm so glad you're here. Let's get started. It's possible to connect to the divine, and find peace every day. Simple daily tasks offer the perfect time to create spiritual practices, through finding quiet space in the mind, and focusing on gratitude. Let's fold the laundry, and feel close to the divine. Sit comfortably, or if you prefer to stand, feel free. Be sure your clean laundry is within reach. Before you begin to fold, relax your arms and face, and take three deep slow breaths. Find your breath and enjoy your inhale and exhale, three times. Keep your focus with your breath, and pick up the first item. Begin to fold. Take your time, there's no rush. Breathe and fold. Working to keep your attention on what's happening right now. Keep your focus with your breath, and the movement of folding your laundry. When your mind gets busy with other thoughts, and it will, that's okay. Simply come back to your breath. Now notice the feel of the fabrics in your hands. Notice the scent of your laundry soap. Are things still warm from the dryer, or cool to the touch? Notice the weight of each item, and the movements it takes to fold. The lift and drop of your arms. The way your hands hold and release. Your body is right here, folding the laundry. Your mind is right here, folding the laundry. Your spirit is right here, folding the laundry. Be right here, folding the laundry. Each one of these items helps you with your everyday life. Each is a part of you, which makes each one divine and sacred. Your body, your breath, and even the laundry, are sacred and divine. Be grateful for each item of laundry, and how it's connected to your life. Extending your gratitude beyond the laundry, for the next 10 items, think of one thing you are grateful for in your life. One piece of laundry, one thing to be grateful for. You can say each thing out loud, or just in your mind. Do this with the next 10 items. Our lives are busy, we move very fast, which can be a joyous thing when it's balanced with purposeful pauses. When we take a moment to stop, slow down, and enjoy the moment, that is a spiritual experience, such as a moment to breathe, and be grateful while you fold the laundry. Thank you for spending this spiritual moment with Skylight. Enjoy your day.
