[Thomas McConkie, Mindfulness Teacher] There's a practice that comes up in Buddhism and Christianity, it goes by different names, but in some ways, it amounts to the same thing. I'm aware of the language "communion of saints" in Christianity. I love the phrase "calling in the retinue" in Tibetan Buddhism. As we're embarking on this process of exploring Dharma and gospel, the traditions, I want to just offer a meditation, where you can call forth your own retinue or invite whatever beings who inspire you, who inform your spiritual life, to be present right here. From the perspective of the mind, life unfolds linearly through time and space. But when we open the eye of the heart, reality presents itself differently, we could say. In the awakened heart, absolutely everything that has ever been, is, or will be, is already present. And so we're making use of this mystical understanding by calling in any beings that we care to to support our practice, our investigation, our unfolding. Give yourself a few moments to settle. Finding a posture that's comfortable, but also, a posture that allows you to be very alert and present. Feel the softness of the body as you breathe, the ground beneath you. Feel the straightness of the spine and the alertness that that invites in your experience. And begin to call on any being, any beings who inspire you, who support your feel in your life, on your path. These are illumined souls, abler souls, who bring the power of their own being, their wisdom, their compassion, their love and light, all right here, right now. Just feel this from the very center of your being, from the very center of your heart. These beings could be dear family members, who have long since passed, ancestors, who carry the lineage, the traditions that inform you in a beautiful and powerful way. And from the perspective of the heart, there is no time between you and them, no space between you and them, they're right here. All of their goodness, all of their virtue, their power, right at the center of your being, glowing from the inside out. Not just literal ancestors, but the saints and sages, the awakened ones, the noble ones. You can invite, in this moment, all Buddhas, past, present and future to join you and support your practice. Invite Christ and all his retinue, all his apostles and Mary and all of the saints from across the ages who followed in this path of humility and forgiveness. When you sit and open your heart and open yourself up to be inspired, whose presence comes to you, whose presence do you wish to be here more fully? Just allow yourself to call on them for assistance, for aid, support. Though we can't fathom the profound wisdom and compassion of the most illumined souls, nevertheless, their grace reigns down on us, calls us out and beyond ourselves. Let this be so, let it be true. On this path, you never walk alone.
