How to: heal from heartbreak. Breaking up is really hard to do. Loss in any form can cause significant mourning, heartache, loneliness, and grief. There is not much to do besides survive during these hard times, but we've compiled a list of things you can do to help you get through. First, find company, especially company who has been through something similar. Ask them how they did it. Find out how they recovered. Look to other people around you who have been through a breakup. Did they survive? You can, too. Second, fake it till you make it. There can be psychological benefits to putting yourself in an environment that reflects how you want to feel, not how you do feel. Go to a park, surround yourself in nature. Find a sunny spot in your house next to your cat. Whatever it is to you that looks good, physically move yourself to that space. It won't mask your feelings, but it will add a complexity to them that can be helpful. Third, serve. Think of a few people you know. Reach out, tell them what you're going through, and that helping them might help you feel better. Ask them if there is anything you can do for them. It'll force you to get outside yourself. If you can't do this step, ask your friends to help like hanging out or going for a walk. Let them be there for you. Fourth, write it down. There's research that suggests if you can write out your trauma, it helps to clear it from your mind. So sit down and write out every single thing you are feeling. By the end, you might feel just a little better. Fifth, eat and sleep. It can be especially challenging to take care of yourself during high stress times, but it is so essential to keep your basic needs met. It will help alleviate some of the darkness you're feeling. Try to get to bed early, eat food that you find comforting and can't turn down, ask a friend to dinner. You can do this. Finally, meditation and reaching out to God can have enormous mental health and mood benefits. Even if it's just for a few minutes a day, ask God for help.
