Holiday Heart Check for Stress & Anxiety

Quickly understand and address your emotions.

View Transcript
- Holiday season can be rough. They're filled with new and old faces, rekindling and resurfacing of questions that we rather not address or maybe we're not yet comfortable addressing. This holiday season, I want to invite you into my simple, yet effective heart check practice. A heart check is simply coming into awareness of the emotions we are feeling and where they are stemming from. Through doing this daily practice, we can not only identify our heavy emotions, but lay their heaviness to rest and walk with a sense of lightness and gratitude towards the plan that God has over our lives. The next time you feel overwhelmed by the stresses of life, whether that be on holiday shopping or getting ready for a family get-together, I want you to take a moment to be still in your emotions. Ask yourself these questions. What am I feeling right now? Can I put a label to this emotion? When did I start feeling this way? When we take a moment to be still and backtrack through our emotions, we can identify the possible triggers that are causing discomfort and uneasiness. Okay, let's move forward. The answers to those previous questions will guide the next steps of this heart check. Let's say we've come into the awareness that we are feeling anxious. We're anxious about the people we might run into and the uncomfortable interactions that we may have to have. In this moment, we have identified the position of our heart. We know what we are feeling and where it is stemming from. In this case, we're feeling anxiety, and it's stemming from the assumption of events that are to come. Now, in this moment, we have the opportunity to invite God into the process of working through our emotions. I think of this verse here: "Do not be anxious about anything, "but in prayer and petition and thanksgiving, "present your requests to God." When we identify the emotions that we are battling with, we have nothing more to do but give it to God. Give your worry and uneasiness to the one that can bring true peace and understanding. Through this process, we not only lean on a higher power, but we relinquish the heavy load that we have been carrying. Our spirit becomes lighter, our mind, our heart becomes lighter, and we can walk into the room with a sense of lightness and gratitude, gratitude for all that God has carried and is still carrying us through, and gratitude to see life through a different perspective, through perspective of glass half full rather than glass half empty. Thank you for your presence and vulnerability through this practice. I hope to see you again with a brighter and lighter spirit filled with love and light.
